Blackstrap Hill Preserve
The Blackstrap Hill Preserve abuts the Wilshore Community Farm, giving hikers, birders, horseback riders, mountain bikers, skiers, and biologists nearly 500 acres of public-access land to enjoy during all four seasons. There are now several well-marked trails, all beginning from the access area off Blackstrap Road (369 Blackstrap Rd.) which vary in length and scenery. Though some do offer steep slopes and magnificent views, none are impassable.
FCT officially opened the Blackstrap Hill Preserve to visitors in April of 2004. During the summer of 2004, a new trail was created off the Blue Trail, running along a stream replete with several waterfalls.
A kiosk of the site holds trail maps for visitors to use. Special seasonal hikes will be posted at the kiosk.
Directions: From Portland, take Washington Ave. (Routes 26/100) north 1 mile past Turnpike Exit 10. Turn left onto Mountain Road (at the light) and take to the end, turning right onto Blackstrap Road. Parking is on the right about .25 mile north of the Mountain Road intersection.
