Stewardship Opportunites Available

Historically, Falmouth Land Trust stewardship has consisted primarily of two responsibilities:

  • We establish baseline records to document the condition of an acquired property, or one in conservation easement, with photographs, maps, and written description.

  • We monitor the property yearly to ensure that terms of conservation easement or deed restrictions are not being violated.

Problems are resolved either by the stewardship committee or presented to the Board for action. The acquisition of Blackstrap Hill Preserve in West Falmouth presents new challenges. The existing trail system is to be extended to the southwest corner at Blackstrap Road, where a small parking area is planned with an information kiosk, as well as buffer protection for neighbors. Split rail fencing is intended to limit motorized-vehicle access. A separate stewardship committee, chaired by Darcy Donald, has been formed to meet these challenges. An immediate concern is the access available for dirt bikes and ATVs from the power line onto the trail system. Efforts to stabilize remaining trails and limit access are being undertaken. While these restrictions may be difficult to enforce, we are optimistic that responsible recreation will preserve this beautiful area for future generations to enjoy.
